Congratulations! You have a robust Flipboard account and you enjoy a healthy readership.

Yet.

You are leaving something on the table. You are not sharing your magazines outside of the Flipboard platform. As a result, you are losing an opportunity to be seen and followed! Time and time again I see beautiful magazines that only reside on Flipboard. They never leave the platform and never get seen anywhere else.

Your magazines should be seen EVERYWHERE!

Let’s maximize your profile now!

In this article, I am going to show you how you can share your magazines and profile outside of Flipboard.

Let me start by making a few very important suggestions:

Your website is the best place to make full use of your Flipboard account. Rather than search through a blog, many followers may prefer to read segmented content that addresses topics of interest.

So keep the momentum going and share on your website. Here are a few tips:

Massively Important: Download the Flipboard widgets here. Put them on your publication(s).

Here’s Why: Sharing your magazines outside the platform can contribute to greater exposure. It allows you to showcase your expertise, products, or services to a far wider audience.

Flipboard Tools
  • The FlipIt bookmarklet allows readers to flip content directly into their magazines. If they are Flipboard users, all you have to do is share. Most every blog on the planet widely uses share features like X, Threads, and Facebook. Why not use the Flipboard bookmarklet for the same purpose? Share your content on the platform for more exposure. It’s available on the Chrome Web Store
  • Positively put the “Follow” button on your website. Make it as obvious as possible. As it is very hard to get followers on the platform. Getting followers is every user’s pain point. Here’s your chance to get a few new readers when you install this button on your publication in a visible locale. You can pick your size and color and it’s a simple bit of code that goes on your website.
The Flipboard “Share” Icon from a website
  • The Flipboard “Share” button will allow a reader to share your content in their magazine. This widget is also a good one to encourage sending more traffic to your website via the platform. Same as the “Follow” button, it’s a bit of code you can put on your website.
Sample of the Magazine Widget
  • The Magazine and Storyboard Preview widget is very underused. By not taking advantage of this powerful tool, you are losing viewers. Your magazines should be featured on your website. You will get more exposure on Flipboard and more traffic back to your website. The organized nature of a magazine helps your readers go through your content. There is a back and-forth from your website to the magazine that increases exposure. You can add this widget to your website, to your emails, to your articles and so much more.

Join the Fediverse:

Here’s a great chance to circulate your content further. Lucky for us, this opportunity still resides within the platform.

According to The Verge: “If you have a Flipboard account, you’ll soon have an account everywhere in the open social web.”

Translation: You will get more exposure as ActivityPub gains more traction throughout the web.

According to Flipboard CEO Mike McCue. “I think Flipboard is going to be the first mainstream consumer service that existed in a walled garden that switches over to ActivityPub.”

Translation: Be the first kid on the block and join Flipboard.social. We will figure it out as we go along. Just get an account on Flipboard’s instance on the Fediverse. Use the same name as your Flipboard profile so you can be recognized by other users.

Here’s Why: External sharing on Mastodon or Bluesky helps build a community around your content. As we gain more knowledge of the ins and outs of the Fediverse, there will surely be more opportunities for all of us.

  • Your curation from Flipboard will be accessible on Mastodon and other Fediverse services like Bluesky.
  • You will get traffic and visibility as more publications join the Fediverse with their instances.

Add Your Magazines to Your Email Newsletters:

Flipboard’s visually appealing layout engagingly presents content. This can make your emails more attractive and capture the attention of your audience.

Here’s Why: Help attract a whole new group of readers who might not be using Flipboard but are interested in the topics you cover.

  • Your content is more likely to be shared with your readers’ network, extending the reach of your message.
  • Share your “featured magazines” of the month in your weekly email blasts. Also, inform your readers when you have been featured by Flipboard.

Note: You can only share the widget if you have access to the HTML format.

Share on Social Media:

Some people prefer to consume content on other social media sites. Promote your magazines across various channels to cater to a diverse audience.

Here’s Why: Sharing externally helps target new readers that might not be on Flipboard:

  • Adapt to your readers’ choices by sharing your Flipboard magazines on multiple social channels. They will likely engage with your content. Also, they will likely share your articles if it’s relevant.
  • Customize your Flipboard magazines to align with your publication’s visual identity. By sharing magazines on your social platforms you maintain brand consistency thus reinforcing your brand image.
  • The Flipboard link provides a beautiful image when you share it on social media. Your viewers will get an immediate positive reaction. This is important for retaining attention and conveying your message effectively.

Pro Tip: I record a Flipboard magazine reel and post it on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Stories. This attracts outside readers and the video is very engaging. See example:

Analytics and Tracking:

You can measure analytics from other sources besides Flipboard. Share magazines through other platforms, to track metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and user engagement. You will have insights into the effectiveness of your content. Set up different forms of tracking to see which medium is the most efficient for your publication.

Here’s Why: Analyze your magazine performance via other platforms such as Google Analytics, Instagram, TikTok insights, and more. Make further adjustments to your Flipboard strategy.

The Results:

Remember The Flipboard WOW factor! The magazines are beautiful and engaging. So share magazines outside the platform to reach a wider audience, and build a more robust online presence. You will amplify organic discovery within Flipboard and leverage other online communities.

Full disclosure: Many of these tips come from my personal experiences with the platform over 12+ years.
